Brad Pitt and his charity, the Make It Right Foundation, are facing a significant legal battle with homeowners in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, an area devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The foundation built 109 homes in this neighborhood, aiming to provide sustainable housing solutions for those affected. However, many of these homes have reportedly suffered from severe structural issues, including toxic mold and high carbon dioxide levels, leading to health concerns among residents.
In 2018, homeowners initiated a class-action lawsuit against both Pitt and the Make It Right Foundation, alleging defective construction and the use of substandard materials. The plaintiffs accuse the foundation of fraud, breach of contract, and unfair trade practices. Despite efforts by Pitt’s legal team to have him removed as a defendant, the court has ruled that he must remain involved in the case, making him potentially liable for damages.
The lawsuit has taken a significant turn as a district court ordered the foundation to release around 100,000 sensitive documents, including 70,000 general records and 30,000 pages of financial data. Additionally, Pitt must remain a defendant and face potential depositions despite his attempts to avoid them due to conflicting film schedules.
The foundation’s legal team has requested additional time to review these materials, which include nearly 195 boxes, 13 filing cabinets, an IT server, and multiple computers. Meanwhile, the plaintiffs’ legal team has engaged forensic accountants, as well as architectural and engineering experts, to strengthen their case.
In 2022, a potential settlement seemed likely when Global Green, an eco-charity affiliated with Pitt, pledged $20.5 million on behalf of Make It Right and Pitt. However, the settlement fell apart when Global Green failed to secure the necessary funds, prolonging the litigation.
The ongoing legal battle highlights the complexities of large-scale philanthropic projects, especially when they involve construction and long-term community impact. As the case unfolds, affected homeowners continue to seek accountability and compensation for the issues affecting their residences.
