A 37-year-old South African man, Hugo Ferreira, has pleaded guilty to the horrific rape and murder of his eight-day-old daughter. The shocking crime occurred in Welverdiend, near Carletonville, and Ferreira is set to be sentenced next Thursday in the Pretoria High Court.
Gruesome Details of the Crime
Court documents reveal that on June 8, 2023, Ferreira was left alone with his newborn daughter while the child’s mother, Maureen Brand, went out to sell clothes to buy diapers. Upon her return, she discovered the infant had been brutally assaulted—both physically and sexually. The baby was rushed to Carletonville Hospital but succumbed to severe head injuries the following day.
In his plea, Ferreira admitted to losing his temper when the baby cried from hunger and a soiled diaper. He confessed to violently grabbing the infant by the neck, repeatedly hitting her, and slamming her head against a surface. He then sexually assaulted her, later admitting he knew his actions could be fatal but proceeded regardless.
Ferreira claimed he was under the influence of methamphetamine but acknowledged that the drugs did not absolve him of responsibility. He also admitted to hiding the baby’s injuries from the mother to avoid immediate detection.
