Trent to Real Madrid? Rooney Explains Why It Makes Sense

If Trent Alexander-Arnold joins Real Madrid this summer, no one should question his decision. I once faced a similar temptation to move to Spain, so I understand the appeal.

At 26, Alexander-Arnold’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season, leaving him at a career crossroads—commit to his boyhood club or embrace a new challenge at Real Madrid, who are keen to sign him.

While leaving Liverpool for any other club might raise eyebrows, Real Madrid’s status as the world’s biggest club with a legendary history makes this a career opportunity too significant to ignore.

Real Madrid’s Universal Appeal

Back in 2010, when I expressed my desire to leave Manchester United, three elite clubs approached me—Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Barcelona. While a move to Manchester City was never on the table, the allure of playing in Spain was undeniable.

For a brief moment, a transfer to Real Madrid seemed likely, but Barcelona’s legendary squad—featuring Messi, Iniesta, Xavi, and Busquets—was particularly enticing. Ultimately, I stayed at United, but the appeal of joining such a dominant team was undeniable.

Now, Real Madrid boasts superstars like Mbappé, Bellingham, and Vinícius Jr. It’s no surprise Alexander-Arnold would be tempted to play alongside them. Few players spend their entire career at one club—legends like Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher are rare exceptions. A new challenge in Spain could be an exciting next step for him.

More Than Just Trophies

Alexander-Arnold
Alexander-Arnold has already won every major trophy with Liverpool, including the Premier League and Champions League.

Unlike my situation in 2010, where I considered leaving United due to concerns over the club’s direction, Liverpool remain title contenders.

His potential move isn’t about silverware but about embracing a new culture and challenge. English players like Jude Bellingham have thrived abroad, and Alexander-Arnold’s friendship with him could ease the transition.

Could He Still Stay at Liverpool?

Liverpool fans are understandably upset at the thought of losing their homegrown star, especially on a free transfer. However, the club has allowed key players like Salah and Van Dijk to enter contract limbo before, just as they did with Wijnaldum and Firmino.

The scrutiny on Alexander-Arnold is heightened because he’s a local hero, but he’s been a loyal servant to the club. If he seeks a fresh challenge, fans should respect his decision.

That said, transfer rumors don’t always materialize. In 2010, United fans protested outside my house, unaware I had already agreed to a new deal. Alexander-Arnold hasn’t signed anything with Real Madrid yet, so an Anfield stay remains possible.
