A tragic incident occurred in Bugakwo village, located in the Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, where a 37-year-old housewife, Mama Zahra, suddenly collapsed and died while fetching water.
According to the village head, Suleiman Adamu, who confirmed the event via a phone call, the unfortunate incident took place around 2:34 PM on Saturday, March 22, 2025. Mama Zahra, a mother of four, had left her home to fetch water from a nearby borehole. While on her way back, carrying a basin of water on her head, she suddenly slumped and lost consciousness.
Eyewitnesses and neighbors who were present at the scene immediately rushed to assist her. They attempted to revive her by pouring water on her, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Realizing the severity of the situation, she was quickly transported on a motorcycle to the Kwaku Primary Health Centre for urgent medical attention. However, upon arrival, medical personnel at the health center confirmed that she had passed away.
The village head further explained that as soon as the tragic news broke, he instructed two of his palace aides to locate the woman’s husband, who was working on his farm at the time, and inform him about the incident. Upon being notified, the grieving husband recalled that Mama Zahra had complained of a severe headache the night before. He had given her paracetamol in an attempt to relieve her discomfort before leaving for the farm after Subhi prayers (early morning Islamic prayers).
Medical professionals at the Kwaku Health Centre later attributed her sudden death to high blood pressure (hypertension), which may have caused her to collapse while carrying the heavy load of water. The incident has since left the community in shock and mourning, as residents express their condolences to the grieving family.
